For millions of workers who rely on buses, trains, and cycle routes to get to work every day, the prospect of a smoother and safer commute is edging closer. The government has confirmed a £104 million investment to strengthen local transport links across England. The funding, delivered through the Local Transport Grant (LTG), will be channelled to communities outside the country’s biggest cities, supporting projects that workers say make the biggest difference to their daily lives.

Journeys that matter most

Whether it is waiting at a draughty bus stop on a winter morning, navigating busy junctions on a bike, or sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the daily commute can be a source of stress. With the new LTG boost, local councils will be able to introduce practical schemes designed to ease these struggles.

Among the improvements could be the roll-out of zero-emission buses to cut air pollution during the morning rush, safer cycle lanes for those pedalling to the office, and upgraded pedestrian crossings with better lighting for people on foot. For smaller towns and rural areas, the money could mean more frequent services and greater access to jobs, schools and healthcare.

Commuters themselves know the difference such measures could make. Sarah, who travels by bus each day to her job in the East Midlands, said:

“Sometimes the bus is late or overcrowded, which means I arrive stressed before my day has even begun. More reliable and cleaner services would take a huge weight off.”

Meanwhile, Mark, a warehouse worker in Yorkshire who cycles to his night shifts, explained:

“Cycling saves me money, but some routes are dangerous in the dark. Better lighting and safer cycle lanes would make a big difference to me and others who work unsociable hours.”

A focus on workers and communities

The regions set to benefit most include the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands and West Midlands. Local authorities in these areas will now have the resources to develop tailored plans that reflect the real experiences of those travelling to work, shopping centres, or essential appointments.

For workers, this could mean less time stuck in traffic, fewer delays caused by unreliable services, and a wider choice of employment and training opportunities within reach. By easing transport pressures, the investment also aims to help communities grow stronger and more connected.

Building better journeys

This £104 million allocation forms part of a much larger package of transport investment. It builds on the government’s £2.2 billion commitment, giving councils multi-year certainty to press ahead with ambitious transport upgrades.

For commuters, the outcome promises a noticeable difference in daily routines. Those reliant on public transport may enjoy cleaner and more efficient services. Cyclists should find safer and more reliable routes, while drivers could see congestion-busting schemes helping to reduce delays on key roads. In areas that have long felt left behind, improved connections are expected to unlock access to jobs, training, education and public services.

By putting resources into the hands of local leaders, the government hopes the improvements will not just make the commute easier but also help local economies thrive. For millions of workers, this funding could mean the start of a better journey to work — one that is safer, quicker and more reliable.
