As autumn deepens and the temperature drops, coughs, colds, and sore throats are sweeping across workplaces nationwide. Yet, for many UK workers, the key question remains: Is it COVID again, or just a winter bug?

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), COVID infections are climbing week on week, with public health experts urging those eligible to receive their autumn vaccine for “optimal protection” ahead of the winter months.

At the same time, flu cases are rising, particularly among young adults, creating a confusing landscape for workers deciding whether to rest or return to work.

Pharmacist Amir Bhogal, superintendent of the Pyramid Pharmacy Group, explained the subtle but important differences:

“A cold usually tends to be congestion-related, whereas flu is more about fever, chills, and tiredness. COVID, on the other hand, is often everything all at once.”

However, Bhogal stresses that the only way to be certain is to take a test. Free NHS tests are available to those eligible for COVID treatment, while commercial options are widely sold at major retailers like Boots, Superdrug, and Amazon.

He further warns against ignoring lingering symptoms:

“If you’re still coughing or hoarse three weeks after your initial illness, get checked. We’ve seen people assume it’s long COVID, but some turned out to have whooping cough or a secondary bacterial infection.”

The latest COVID variants across the UK

The Stratus (XFG) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) variants are currently the most common COVID strains circulating in the UK, according to the UKHSA.
Stratus now represents about 35% of sequenced cases, while Nimbus accounts for roughly 11%.

Both have been categorised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “variants under monitoring.” Scientists have found no evidence that either strain causes more severe illness than previous versions, but some anecdotal reports suggest Stratus may cause hoarseness, while Nimbus is associated with a painful, “razor blade” sore throat.

Both variants emerged over the summer and are expected to continue circulating through the winter. The UKHSA continues to stress the importance of seasonal COVID vaccinations, which provide the best protection against serious illness and hospitalisation.

Current COVID symptoms in 2025

Many of the COVID symptoms in 2025 remain consistent with previous years, overlapping heavily with flu and common colds. According to NHS guidance, the most frequent symptoms include:

  • High temperature or chills
  • New, continuous cough
  • Fatigue and muscle aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Diarrhoea or nausea

Although most people recover without medical assistance, the NHS urges anyone experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe fatigue to seek immediate help.

What UK workers should do if off sick with COVID or flu

For many UK workers, the decision to take time off sick can be challenging—particularly with financial pressures and rising living costs. However, protecting your health and that of others remains the priority.

The NHS recommends staying at home if you have a high temperature or feel too unwell to work. During recovery, the government’s Living with COVID guidance remains in place and includes:

  • Wearing a face mask in enclosed or crowded spaces
  • Avoiding poorly ventilated areas
  • Spending time outdoors where possible
  • Coughing or sneezing into tissues and washing hands frequently
  • Using sanitiser after contact with shared surfaces

Employees may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), depending on the duration of absence and employment conditions. The Workers Union advises all members to review their workplace policies to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities when taking time off due to illness.

The recent rise in COVID and flu cases once again highlights the need for vigilance and care in UK workplaces. Maintaining good hygiene, staying home when unwell, and following NHS guidance all contribute to safer working environments and a healthier nation.

As ever, The Workers Union stands by the UK workforce—offering clear information, practical advice, and a commitment to helping workers stay well, informed, and supported through the winter ahead.
