Self Assessment tax return

File your Self Assessment tax return now for less stress and more benefits

The Workers Union is urging its members and followers not to wait until the last minute to file their Self Assessment tax return, as HMRC reports a growing trend of early submissions—and the benefits are significant.

As the new tax year rolls forward, many people may not give a second thought to filing their Self Assessment tax return until the end of January approaches. But according to HMRC, more than 295,000 people beat the rush this year by filing in the first week of the 2024/25 tax year. These proactive taxpayers are now reaping the rewards, including quicker refunds, better financial planning, and lower stress levels.

Why file now?: Avoid the January panic

While the official deadline for submitting the 2024/25 Self-Assessment tax return is 31 January 2026, taxpayers don’t need to wait until the new year to tick that box. Filing early comes with a host of advantages that many overlook. HMRC’s data shows that people often delay because of busy lifestyles, fear of the process, or simply being unaware of the benefits of early filing.

Early filing offers more than peace of mind:

  • Avoid last-minute stress: Filing early eliminates the January pressure and the risk of errors from rushing.
  • Spread payments: If you file by 30 December 2025, you may be eligible to have tax collected automatically from your wages or pension via PAYE in the following tax year. This helps smooth out cash flow without large lump-sum payments.
  • Faster refunds: If you’ve overpaid tax, you’ll find out sooner and receive any refund faster.
  • Time to budget: Knowing what you owe early gives you time to set aside money or spread payments using HMRC’s Budget Payment Plan.
  • Proof of income: For those applying for mortgages, loans or benefits, filing early provides clear income verification when you need it.

Filing made simple

HMRC’s Self Assessment portal on GOV.UK is designed to make the process quick, secure, and straightforward. Over 97% of taxpayers now file online, and customer satisfaction consistently hovers around 80%. The platform supports a range of self-service features, including:

  • Resetting your password
  • Retrieving your tax code
  • Accessing your National Insurance number
  • Downloading the HMRC app for mobile ease

Support is also available via HMRC helplines and webchat for those who need extra guidance. For individuals with health conditions or other challenges that make online filing difficult, HMRC offers an Extra Support Service—accessible via GOV.UK by searching “get help from HMRC if you need extra support.”

Not sure you need to file?

Some taxpayers may no longer need to complete a Self Assessment return. If that’s you, it’s vital to notify HMRC as soon as possible. Delays in doing so can result in unnecessary penalties. For information on stopping Self Assessment requirements, visit GOV.UK or search for HMRC’s guidance video on YouTube.

Don’t delay—take action today

The longer you wait, the higher the likelihood of avoidable stress or missed opportunities. Whether it’s securing a refund, planning for future payments, or ensuring your records are up to date for financial applications, taking the time now to file your return can pay off in multiple ways.

With the Self Assessment system more user-friendly than ever, there’s little reason to put it off. Make this the year you skip the “January blues” and start 2025 knowing your tax affairs are already in order.
