A former NHS paramedic has been handed the ultimate Halloween surprise — a £4 million home in the Surrey Hills — marking a life-changing moment for one UK worker who has dedicated his career to helping others.

Father-of-two Alistair Walker, 33, from Darlington, was left stunned when he discovered he had scooped the luxury home and an additional £250,000 cash prize through an Omaze competition. The announcement came on October 31st, a date Mr Walker now calls “the best treat I’ve ever had.”

The impressive property, located in one of England’s most picturesque and affluent areas, offers panoramic countryside views, a swimming pool, and ample space for family life. Yet despite the magnitude of the prize, Mr Walker says he and his wife have not yet decided whether they will keep the house or sell it.

“We don’t know what we’ll do long-term yet, but we’ll definitely be taking the girls down there to enjoy some family time,” he said. “Our daughters can even learn to swim in their very own pool.”

Having worked in the NHS for over a decade, first as a paramedic and now as a manager, Mr Walker’s story is a heartwarming reminder of how ordinary people working in public service continue to make extraordinary impacts on others — even as they quietly go about their own daily lives.

The win comes at a particularly joyful time for the young family, who recently welcomed their second baby daughter. For Mr Walker, the timing couldn’t have been better.

“We’ve just had our second baby daughter, so this win has come at the perfect time,” he explained. “It’s the best feeling in the world knowing our daughters’ futures are secure – it’s absolutely incredible.”

Reflecting on his unexpected good fortune, he joked that luck might run in the family:

“I’ve never really won anything before – my wife’s grandma used to win on the bingo a lot, so maybe some of that luck has rubbed off on us.”

The Surrey Hills property was the grand prize in one of Omaze UK’s charitable draws, which raise money for vital causes through luxury prize competitions. In this instance, the campaign raised an impressive £1 million for Breast Cancer Now, a leading charity funding research and support for people affected by the disease.

James Oakes, President of Omaze, expressed his delight for the Walker family:

“We’re absolutely thrilled for Alistair and his family. Whether he chooses to move in, rent it out, or sell and walk away a multi-millionaire, the choice is entirely up to him. Thanks to the generosity of the Omaze community, this draw has raised £1,000,000 for Breast Cancer Now, helping to fund lifesaving research.”

This win not only highlights the life-changing potential of such charitable competitions but also celebrates the efforts of UK workers like Mr Walker, whose dedication to the NHS has touched countless lives. His story serves as a reminder of the power of positivity, perseverance, and community spirit — values deeply rooted in the heart of working Britain.

As The Workers Union continues to champion stories of UK workers and their resilience, tales like Mr Walker’s are an uplifting reminder that sometimes, fortune really does favour those who dedicate themselves to helping others.
