UK tradespeople shout out for support as red tape and costs rise

A recent study of 850 tradespeople by Checkatrade revealed that while the sector is keen to support the national growth agenda, a significant number feel hindered by mounting barriers. Four out of five surveyed cited rising costs of essential materials and tools, along with an alarming increase in tool theft, as major obstacles to their ability to expand.

Thousands of tradespeople across the UK are struggling to expand their businesses, with growing costs, rising taxes, tool theft, and hiring pressures leaving many unable to contribute fully to the country’s economic growth.

The UK’s trade industry, made up of almost 900,000 workers including electricians, plumbers, decorators, and carpenters, plays a central role in driving the economy. But according to Jambu Palaniappan, chief executive of Checkatrade, more needs to be done to protect and support these workers.

“The UK is a nation dependent on the trade industry — from carpenters to electricians, decorators to roofers,” Palaniappan said. “The 900,000 people behind it couldn’t be more important for propelling our economy.”

Palaniappan added: “The government needs to work with industry to close skills gaps, ensure apprenticeships work for small businesses, and do everything they can to reduce the burdens, the costs, and the taxes that can stifle tradespeople’s growth.”

The survey highlights that in addition to soaring material costs and rising levels of tool theft, a large proportion of respondents are also being squeezed by increasing bureaucracy and higher employer National Insurance Contributions. Many say these combined pressures are leaving them unable to take on apprentices or grow their teams, limiting their potential to fuel the economy at a time when skilled trades are in high demand.

The findings reinforce concerns that, without meaningful action, the sector could face long-term challenges in sustaining the skilled workforce required to meet the UK’s infrastructure and housing needs. For UK workers, it is yet another reminder of the mounting pressures in an industry that remains vital to everyday life.

At The Workers Union, we believe that shining a light on these issues is essential. Tradespeople are among the backbone of our economy, and their contribution must not be overlooked. Addressing rising costs, ensuring access to affordable tools and materials, and protecting workers from theft are vital steps if the government wishes to unlock growth through this essential workforce.

The message from workers across the industry is clear: they want to help drive the UK forward, but they need fair conditions, genuine support, and real solutions to make growth possible.
