Royal Mail has confirmed it will be hiring around 20,000 temporary UK workers to help meet the surge in demand during the Christmas 2025 period. The announcement comes as the organisation prepares for its busiest time of year, with the influx of parcels driven by Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas shopping.
The seasonal royal mail recruitment drive (apply here) will run from late October through to early January 2026, ensuring that the UK postal service can handle record volumes of letters and parcels. The positions are being distributed nationwide, with opportunities across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Jobs across the UK
The breakdown of seasonal roles is significant, with England offering 12,000 mail centre sorting positions, Scotland 2,000, Wales 600, and Northern Ireland 400. In addition, there will be 3,000 delivery and collection jobs spread across the UK, supported by 2,000 temporary HGV driver roles.
To support the additional workload, four extra seasonal sorting centres will be set up in Atherstone, Milton Keynes, Northampton, and Daventry. These hubs will work alongside Royal Mail’s existing 1,200 delivery branches, ensuring parcels reach customers in time for the festive season.
Royal Mail response
Jamie Stephenson, Royal Mail’s interim chief operating officer, commented:
“As we do every year, we will be pulling out all the stops to make Christmas special for our customers. It’s the busiest time for us, and we work tirelessly behind the scenes – planning months in advance – to ensure everything runs smoothly. From delivering festive parcels to supporting online shopping, we’re investing heavily in extra resources, including thousands of seasonal team members, to help make sure every delivery arrives on time and with care.”
Supporting seasonal employment
For UK postal workers, the news offers welcome opportunities for short-term employment during a period of increased financial pressures. The jobs will provide crucial support to households looking to supplement income over the festive months, while also ensuring Royal Mail maintains delivery standards during peak shopping events.
The scale of recruitment also reflects the wider trend of growing online shopping habits, with the logistics and postal sectors continuing to adapt to consumer demand. By creating thousands of additional roles, Royal Mail is sending a clear message about its commitment to reliability and customer service during the holiday season.
A boost for local economies
With thousands of jobs spread across regions, the recruitment campaign is also expected to inject much-needed seasonal income into local communities. From drivers to sorters, the temporary UK workforce will form a vital part of ensuring the smooth flow of goods during what is often the most challenging period of the year for logistics.
For those considering applying, the positions are likely to be highly sought-after, with applications expected to open shortly.
The announcement underscores the scale of preparation required to deliver Christmas for millions of households across the UK. With 20,000 temporary workers being brought on board, Royal Mail is aiming to guarantee that parcels, presents, and festive cards make their way to families and friends on time.
